B.O.L.D Nature Therapy and Forest School Programs provide children and youth with large amounts of time in natural outdoor settings where they can learn, discover and explore. It is the hands-on interactive approach to learning that sparks imagination and unlocks a child’s creativity. The therapeutic approach to this type of programming allows us to use a variety of engaging recreation and leisure activities, in all types of settings and weather conditions, where participants can investigate their natural surroundings. “Nature-based learning touches on and connects every academic discipline imaginable while enlivening the senses and invigorating the body. It encourages curiosity and inquiry, exploration and experimentation, while the mind catalogues, analyzes, and compares.” (https://www.greenchildmagazine.com/learning-natural-world/).
The aim of this type of Nature Therapy program is to work with children and youth over a period of time, to develop, maintain or improve physical, mental, social or emotional well-being on the Land. We must also consider the preventative measures needed to support children and youth by providing programs that nurture discovery and learning in an outdoor environment. “While obesity and poor mental health are complex problems, researchers believe that—among children—more screen time and less physical and outdoor play are among the causes (Muñoz, 2009). As the National Wildlife Federation (2014) puts it, “Our kids are out of shape, tuned out and stressed out because they’re missing something essential to their health and development: connection to the natural world.”(June 2014. Forest and Nature School Canada). Children and youth have a natural wonder of the world and building a relationship with the land around them allows them to connect with themselves, the world around them and each other. Our holistic approach to development encourages self-discovery and allows the opportunity for self-care and well-being.
Balance RT Consulting Ltd. recognizes that the climate in Alberta makes it challenging for children and youth to spend prolonged time outdoors. BOLD programs are designed to offer nature-inspired indoor activities as an extension of our outdoor program; these bring many of the same benefits to children and youth as being outdoors. This is and can be a bridge for many who may not spend time outdoors on a regular basis. This programming model will significantly contribute to their knowledge, awareness, and respect for the land, outdoors and their environment. Our programs can be facilitated in both indoor and outdoor settings and will continue to support children and youth and their overall health and well-being.
Through activities based in or on Nature, children and youth have the opportunity to be creative, problem solve, work as a team, and develop lifelong skills. BOLD Programs not only focus on the development for the children and youth that have not yet reached developmental milestones, but enhances development for all participants.
